Hello, Fellow Dancers !

With the heat and high humidity, we need to be careful this summer. Here are some reminders of ways to stay healthy over the summer.
Stay indoors - go dancing in an air conditioned facility.
Ceiling fans provide comfort as well as a cool shower (before coming to the dance).
Drink more fluids, (we have plenty of water and sodas at the dance).
Never leave anyone in a parked vehicle (bring your friends inside to dance with you).
Wear light-weight, light colored clothing (while dancing.)
On the serious side: Heat stroke is a result of loss of water and salt and is very serious.
Seek shade and re-hydrate by drinking small sips of liquid every three minutes.

See you on the dance floor!

Jean Krupa, Editor

President's Message
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Members,
Did you know that our membership consists of 2/3 ladies and 1/3 men? Each of us has a responsibility to bring more men into our chapter . . . because . . . we ladies need partners . . . and because . . . dancing would be of benefit to the men. We all know that dancing is good for us: physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. Why wouldn't we want to share that with the men (and women) in our lives? Let's all make a concerted effort to bring the joy of dance to those we know and love, men and women. After all, with the benefits of membership growing and growing, there are more and more reasons to join our chapter. For example, in addition to Lawrence Dance Studio offering a free month of group lessons to our new members, effective January 2009, Fred Astaire Studio in Daytona Beach has recently agreed to provide the same benefit. Thank you, Lawrence Dance Studio and Fred Astaire Studio!!!!! That $25 investment (social dancer for a year's membership to our chapter) is a wiser investment every day. Applications are available at our dances and online at our website www.greaterdaytonachapter.org. Be sure to check out Benefits of Membership page for more bargains.
In honor of National Ballroom Dance Week, our chapter will be sponsoring our second annual Mall Ball at the Volusia Mall on Sunday, September 20, from noon - 4. We wish to intersperse demonstrations with general dancing. If you are interested in demonstrating, and we hope you are, please pass your name(s) and dance(s) to me or another Officer or Board Member at your earliest convenience.
Have I mentioned lately that it is an honor to serve as your president? Well, it is.
Keep on dancing!
Marta
Special Olympics
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Special Olympics for Ballroom Dancing was held in Ft. Wayne, IN on July 5. Ballroom dancing became the 22nd Special Olympics sport available for adults and children with intellectual disabilities in Indiana.
The Greater Daytona Chapter donated $200 for their cause.
After the opening ceremonies in honor of the Special Olympics athletes, and oaths were administered to the competitors and judges, the competitors were announced and they paraded onto the dance floor while family members in the audience waved.
Event Organizer Vivian Hans said the dancers, ranging in age from 17 to 56, more than doubled participation from last year.
Special Olympics ballroom dancing is unique to Indiana, she said.
"This is their day. We're here for them to dance."
USA Dance President and Event Chairman of Judges Peter Pover gave words of encouragement to the dancers in attendance, "If you don't win, keep smiling," he said.

Easter Seals Arc, along with Special Olympics Indiana and Fort Wayne DanceSport, coordinated the event for people who have disabilities.

The competition was preceded by opening ceremonies. Fifteen teenagers from Fort Wayne DanceSport performed a "celebration of dance." Ballroom dancing is not new to these ribbon dancers as they belong to Fort Wayne DanceSport Chapter of USA Dance and their desire to show their support for the newest dancers in DanceSport is outstanding and a credit to these young adults. The Ribbon Dance was choreographed by Luke Holliger. Turn up you sound and click on the link below.

Chapter Outreach
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ann Milano, Lewis Lampe, Paul Spano and Polly Foster met on June 27 at Signature Ormond in the Pines Skilled Nursing Facility in Ormond Beach to dance for the residents. They danced for about 2 1/2 hours through every smooth and rhythm dance across the spectrum (including a couple of Polkas by request) for an enthusiastic group of senior citizens. Two of the ladies from the staff joined Paul on the dance floor for a Swing and some Merengues and Salsas. That made it even more fun! Polly said, "We had a great time and it seemed the audience did, too."
Quote of the Day!
Dancing is wonderful training for girls. It's the first way you learn to guess what a man is going to do before he does it.
