The Greater Daytona Chapter of USA Dance was proud to sponsor a celebration of National Ballroom Dance Week, which we called The Mall Ball, at Volusia Mall, on Sunday, September 20, from noon until 4 p.m.
Our vision for this year's Mall Ball was that the general public would see the general public, our chapter members, doing what they love to do . . . dance. In addition to our chapter members, our dancers included dance professionals and their students. We sincerely thank them for participating as well. Thirteen of the nineteen demonstrations were presented by our chapter members and included Tango, Rumba, Salsa, East Coast Swing, Samba, Cha Cha, Foxtrot, a Samba line dance, Bolero, Merengue, and Waltz. Between performances, we invited the audience to join us for general dancing; and, many of them did. We ended with a Foxtrot to The Best Things Happen While You Are Dancing. I love this idea of our chapter members dancing for the pleasure and edification of the general public. Members, I hope you will consider participating in The Mall Ball next year. It is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, September 18, from 11 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. In the meantime . . . Keep on dancing! Marta | Halloween Costume Ball ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Come dressed for our Halloween Costume Ball on October 24. There will be cash prizes for the best costumes. $50. for First place, $35. for Second place and $25. for Third place. Get creative! The contest will take place around 8:30 allowing you time to change (if you wish) and dance the night away.
| Afterglow of Dance ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The mood boosting effect of physical activity may last much longer than was previously thought. In a study presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in May, researchers randomly assigned 48 volunteers to 20 minutes of aerobic exercise or an equal period of rest. They found that the exercisers (dancers?) reported better moods that the nonexercisers for up to 12 hours. | USA Dance - GDC in the News ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An article on our "Mall Ball" is posted on the National Website and from there you are directed to Henry and Jean's Bolero on youtube.com. Be sure to welcome our new members! | Dear Etta Kitt ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Can the quest to smell good put you on fragrance overload? Etta says - Thank you for your question! It's important to smell fresh and clean before a dance, attending a party or taking a dance lesson. We have all experienced too much cologne from both men and women. They usually don't know that their attempt to smell good is doing just the opposite. John Bridges, author of "How to be a Gentleman," answers the question in Chapter 2: A Gentleman and His Cologne . A gentleman considers cologne intimate apparel. It should not cause comment, positive or negative, among other people in the room. Instead, it should be saved as a pleasant surprise. A gentleman understands that cologne is an accessory. It is not to be used as a substitute for deodorant. A dab on either side of his neck is quite enough.
When used to excess, cologne is annoying and raises questions about what smells are being covered up. Perfume, cologne, and aftershave are lovely when a mere hint of fragrance is apparent. They are ghastly when people are forced to run to open windows after you walk by. | Jack & Jill Contest ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Just had to share this picture with you. While I was attending a meeting in Louisville, they had a Jack and Jill Foxtrot contest. I couldn't resist. I made the finals with a taller partner, but then when we switched I was paired with the shortest man for the finale. I didn't realize it was going to make ME look 8' tall. On top of that, he danced International style, but you can tell by the smile on our faces that we enjoyed ourselves. |
